The Wine House 1821 in Edinburgh is all about the wines. Wherever you look, you are surrounded by outstanding wines or items related to it. It’s the perfect spot for wine enthusiasts who want to broaden their knowledge and sample wines not available anywhere locally.
The location, could not be more perfect, The Wine House 1821 is located in the bustling St James Quarter near Princes Street and St Andrew Square.
Wine tastings and masterclasses are organised on a regular basis with special dinners organised few times a year. We were invited to one of their special events hosted by Michele Zonin who explained more about the heritage of Zonin Wines. Exquisite 4-course dinner was matched with 5 outstanding wines including the premium Feudo Principi di Butera “Deliella” Nero d’Avola DOC 2012 and Famiglia Zonin Amarone DOCG 2013. Guests had also the opportunity to try the new Zonin ‘Imperiale’ craft gin.

Zonin’s Brut Nature Metodo Classico Oltrenero DOCG
Guests were welcomed at Bar 1821 with a glass of Zonin’s Brut Nature Metodo Classico Oltrenero DOCG and special G&T made using Zonin ‘Imperiale’ craft gin. Decorated in soft, warm tones, with mood lighting, low-slung banquette seating and an illuminated bar taking centre stage, Bar 1821 was the perfect space to gather all guests.
The main event was organised in a stunning event suite. The room benefits from huge picture windows and amazing views of Carlton Hill. Stylishly decorated, it effortlessly blends period charm with designer chic and glamour throughout.
Michele Zonin, Vice President of Wine House Hotel 1821
The Zonin family have been Vintners for seven generations with their roots in the heart of the land and vineyards in the hills of the Veneto region of North Eastern Italy. They have been making wine since 1821 and own almost 4,500 acres of vineyards, divided among 11 estates in seven of the country’s most highly regarded winemaking regions: Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli, Tuscany, Apulia and Sicily. Zonin also owns the Barboursville Vineyards winery in Barboursville, Virginia, USA and is renowned for making wines that highlight the exclusivity of their terroirs, varietal characteristics and – ultimately – the personality of each individual wine.
Cold smoked sea trout with fennel salad & pomegranate seeds
Our first course was cold smoked sea trout with fennel salad & pomegranate seeds paired with
Ca’ Bolani Sauvignon Blanc DOC 2016
Ca’ Bolani Sauvignon Blanc DOC 2016
The elegance and fruity floral aromas make this wine ideal to be paired with smoked trout and fennel salad. I loved the intense and persistent finish this wine offers.
The vegetarian option was burrata with pesto and cherry tomatoes
The second course was Slow-cooked wild boar ragu, finished with chestnuts & juniper berries
Castello di Albola Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2013
Slow-cooked wild boar ragu, finished with chestnuts & juniper berries
The vegetarian option was scallops with mussels
Chianti Classico is by far one of my favourite red wines. With a full garnet-red colour and delicate notes of red fruits and almonds, high acidity makes this wine a fantastic pairing for tomato-based dishes like pasta or pizza.
The main course was a showstopper. Braised shin of beef in a rich red wine & dark chocolate sauce, potato flan, leeks & sage was paired with 2 fantastic wines: Feudo Principi di Butera “Deliella” Nero d’Avola DOC 2012 and Famiglia Zonin Amarone DOCG 2013
Braised shin of beef in a rich red wine & dark chocolate sauce, potato flan, leeks & sage
The beef was cooked to perfection and the melted chocolate created a silky texture with a glossy look for the rich red wine sauce. Rich, warming and hearty flavour of the dish was paired with 2 exceptional wines: Feudo Principi di Butera “Deliella” Nero d’Avola DOC 2012 and Famiglia Zonin Amarone DOCG 2013. I loved the intense flavour of Nero d’Avola but my favourite pairing for the main course was with Amarone della Valpolicella. This wine is one of the most popular wines from the region and won numerous prizes and awards (the International Wine Challenge awarded the 2014 Gold, Trophy_Points_97, Trophy and the Mundus Vini awarded the 2013 vintage Gold).

Zonin Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, Veneto
Our final course was Passion fruit & mango cheesecake paired with Castello del Poggio Moscato D’asti DOCG 2016
Passion fruit & mango cheesecake
I absolutely loved our final wine. Passionfruit & mango cheesecake was an excellent choice for the delicate scents of peaches this wine offers. The sweet but not overpowering wine was well-balanced and inviting.
The event was a huge success! Michele Zonin and Head Sommelier, Andrea Fasan of La Petite Maison in London, explained about each wine and answered all questions guests had about the Zonin wine estate and their offering. The team at The Wine House 1821 delivered outstanding dishes which complimented the quality wines chosen for the event.
