The Grill Room at Hotel Colessio in Stirling Review

 

Opened in mid 2014 the Hotel Colessio strikes with elegance and modern sophistication from the moment you walk in. Located only 200 yards from Stirling Castle, the hotel features 40 stunning bedrooms and suites and its home to one of the most popular restaurant in the area, The Grill Room.

This beautiful Victorian building has been transformed and restored to its former glory with a modern contemporary twist.

The hotel is often visited by celebrities including pop princess Kylie Minogue, who sang its praises when she and her entourage stayed at Colessio in November 2014!

It was our first visit to Hotel Colessio, even though we’ve driven past it a few times visiting Stirling’s landmarks.  We were warmly welcomed by the staff and shown to the white leather comfy booth that was reserved for us.  The interior features a stunning contrast between large comfy booths studded with Swarovski crystals and tables paired with luxurious wing-back chairs.

We could not drink any alcohol; however, we could not resist a couple of mocktails from the cocktail bar. If you feel like having a drink, the bar offers classic and modern cocktails that change seasonally to complement the menu. If after a couple of drinks, you feel peckish, you can order lighter options from the bar menu including salads, sandwiches, sharing platers or desserts.

The menu at the Grill Room is very extensive and whether you fancy meat, burgers, fish & seafood or vegetarian options, you will be spoilt for choice.  The outstanding menu is matched by an extensive drinks list, featuring wines, champagnes, ports and cognacs to suit any occasion.

 

Not to mention the signature dishes like steaks, burgers and lobsters are cooked on Josper Grill.  Of Spanish origin, the Josper is a sealed oven, fuelled by a Bincho-tan ‘white’ hardwood oak charcoal, which grills meat, fish and vegetables swiftly and perfectly – creating unrivalled flavours. Lauded by world-famous chefs including Gordon Ramsay, Heston Blumenthal and Jason Atherton, Hotel Colessio is proud to be one of the few venues in the UK to feature this type of grill.

 

We could not decide on the dishes we wanted, as there were so many to try. Luckily knowledgeable staff were on hand to help us with the most suitable options.

We opted for Scottish Seared Scallops and Stornway Black Pudding for starters and Scottish Salmon Fillet and Harissa Roast Lamb for mains.

 

SCOTTISH SEARED SCALLOPS

 Apple & Artichoke Purée, Crispy Bacon & Peas, Nut Brown Butter

Scallops came beautifully presented on the shell surrounded by seaweed and marinated artichokes.  As you may notice, I often order scallops and enjoy them every time.  Scallops with bacon and apple puree is a classic combination that tastes heavenly. The chef at The Grill Room decided to improve this classic combo with nut brown butter and artichokes.

Scallops were soft inside and perfectly seasoned with sea salt and pepper. Without a doubt, I could eat another portion of them.

STORNOWAY BLACK PUDDING

Charred Asparagus, Crispy Poached Egg Lemon Hollandaise

Stornoway black pudding is famous throughout the world as a ‘taste of the islands’. I loved the full and rich meaty flavour of black pudding which was not greasy and had a fresh aftertaste.

Lovely taste of charred asparagus teamed up with the smoky flavours of black pudding with a perfect poached egg with a runny yolk was a real crowd pleaser.

SCOTTISH SALMON FILLET

Salt-Baked Crushed Jersey Royal Potatoes, Asparagus, Broad Beans, Green Peas Champagne Butter & Chive Sauce

 

I’ve tried lots of salmon dishes in the past but never paired with champagne butter and chive sauce and to be honest I have fallen for that combo. My 2 favourite things: champagne and salmon served on one plate. What more could you want?

HARISSA ROAST LAMB RACK’N’RUMP

Buttermilk & Herb Mash, Roasted Marinated Vegetables, Feta Crumble, Salsa Verde

 

Roasted lamb was cooked to perfection and had a soft and tender texture. Roasted marinated vegetables complimented the flavour of the meat.

The main focus at the restaurant is high-quality locally sourced produce and seasonally inspired dishes infused with ingenious touches from the chef.

 

Dessert was a tough choice but again with a little help from the staff we opted for Baked Alaska and Lemon Posset.

LEMON POSSET

Beautifully presented in small glass bowl, lemon posset was topped with red berries and blackcurrant ice cream.

 

Baked Alaska was very popular in the 70’s and 80’s and it seems to have it’s come back to quite often reappear on restaurant menus.

BAKED ALASKA 

A delicious combination of sponge cake topped with raspberry jam and creamy vanilla ice cream, encased in fluffy meringue and finished with the help of the chef’s blowtorch to a crispy chewy finish. Pure indulgence!

 

The Grill Room at Hotel Colessio delivers a great food in stunning settings and historic location. Stirling is a beautiful place to visit and the hotel certainly stands out in city’s landscape.  The service was flawless and friendly and we could not fault food and drinks. Hotel Colessio is the perfect place to celebrate every occasion and the place you’ll want to be seen.
