The Tailend is a family run fish & chips restaurant and takeaway owned by G&A Spink Fish Merchants. All of their fish is supplied by themselves and ethically caught by MSC Registered Boats from the North Sea.
After a huge success of their first restaurant in St Andrews they decided to take over famous Deep Sea Restaurant premises in the Nethergate and open a second restaurant. Deep Sea Restaurant has been an institution in Dundee, hungry Dundonians for over 77years and now is home for new Tailend venture. The building itself has undergone a massive transformation to make premises fit for the purposes of the new restaurant.
Tailend St Andrews has gained a great reputation amongst locals and managed to scoop few national awards. Recently, The Tailend has been listed as the top Restaurant in Scotland by the National Fish & Chip Awards and one of the top 10 in the UK! They were also nominated Top 3 in Fife Business Awards a Thistle award.
At Tailend they believe in supporting Scottish produce and local independent suppliers and all of their products are sourced within few miles radius.
We first visited Tailend in St Andrews back in November where we enjoyed one of their events Battle of Booze (Read our review here).
I was positively surprised to see Asian influences on the menu. I genuinely could eat anything on the menu. I could not decide so I asked staff for recommendations. I love the places where staff knows the menu and they are happy to advise the most suitable options.
Even if you are not a huge fan of fish and chips, they have a great range of tacos, oysters, chicken and salads. Their homemade delicious chips are gluten free and are blanch fried in beef dripping.
SCOTTISH HADDOCK: BATTERED, BREADED OR GRILLED W CHIPS, PEAS & TARTARE SAUCE
We started our meal with Thai rolls with sticky soy sauce and Seared scallops, smoked pork belly with papaya and mango puree.
SEARED SCALLOPS, SMOKED PORK BELLY W PAPAYA AND MANGO PUREE
Scallops had a delicate flavour and sweetness from caramelisation. Crispy pork belly pieces went well with scallops and mango puree was an excellent addition.
THAI CRAB ROLLS W STICKY SOY SAUCE
Crispy Thai Crab Rolls were filled with moist flaked crab meat and dipped into a magical, tangy dipping soy sauce! Arranged on lettuce leaves with the dip in the center for a stunning presentation. Such a great start for an interesting meal.
I wanted to try one of their tacos and I opted for Crispy cod guacamore, red slaw, jalapenos and sriracha mayo .
CRISPY COD W GUACAMOLE, RED SLAW, JALAPENOS AND SRIRACHA MAYO
Tacos have gained a bad reputation for their unhealthiness, but they don’t have to be necessary filled with lots of cheese and mince. I loved Tailend version of tacos and I am sure they will soon become of their signature offerings.
BEETROOT RISOTTO W SMOKED RICOTTA
Risotto is a traditional Italian dish with endless variants. Perfect vegetarian dish not only for vegetarians. Rich, creamy dish was enhanced by the gorgeously rooty flavours from the beetroot. I loved the colour and presentation. Smoked Ricotta cheese was the perfect pairing for sweet beetroot creating hearty, healthy meal. Seasonal beetroot is also a great source of iron that strengthen your bones and blood.
GRILLED SEABASS W CRUSHED POTATOES, SAMPHIRE AND SAUCE VIERGE
Sea bass is always lovely on the grill; its firm white meat holds up very well. Sea bass fillets, served on crushed potatoes, were grilled and seasoned to perfection and drizzled over with some sauce vierge (French sauce made from olive oil, lemon juice, chopped tomato and chopped basil). Crispy texture of samphire really complimented the dish and it happens to be my favourite green of all. A very simple Mediterranean fish dish was full of very sophisticated flavours.
WHITE CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE W MXD BERRY COMPOTE
Cheesecake is always a crowd-pleaser. A stunning pudding full of summer flavours was a perfect culmination of a very relaxing evening. Delicious smooth creamy mixture was just melting in my mouth. The white chocolate and cheese were a perfect combination and the berry compote provided a nice counterbalance to the sweetness of the chocolate.
LEMON & LIME PANNA COTTA WITH GINGERBREAD CRUMBLE
Very light and refreshing creamy panna cotta was bursting with fresh lemon flavour. Topped with gingerbread crumbles, was and elegant looking dessert.
We loved our time at Tailend, the food, the service, the atmosphere, everything’s working in harmony there.
Tailend is also a very affordable option with the prices starting from £3.50 for Tacos and £.7.75 for main courses to £4.75 for desserts.
Tailend is the place where tradition meets modern. Expect traditional fish dishes as well as few incredible unique flavours. You will be spoilt for choice. I will always support places that use locally sourced ingredients and Tailend will be one of them.
