Summer is officially over, but there is nothing quite like the aroma, colours and taste of autumn. There is a noticeable cold in the air, and the leaves are slowly changing colour and falling to the ground. To mark the start of this great season, Malmaison Edinburgh invited us to sample their new exciting autumn menu, bursting with seasonal ingredients and warming flavours.
The format of the evening was to begin with a taste of a cocktail, now known as the ‘Pink lady of Leith’, followed by a meal at the brasserie.
The Pink Lady certainly looked very impressive, and it was in fact delicious!
For those of you who did not know, a few months ago, Malmaison Edinburgh underwent a £1.2m refurbishment under new ownership. The interior is very trendy, with loads of black and red, neon lights and leather! I really like the new look and feel that it certainly fits in with the trendy surroundings of the shore.
Quick look at the menu… I could eat absolutely everything!
The menu is extensive and you are unlikely not to find something that is to your taste. The new autumn menu features the best seasonal ingredients and hearty, warming dishes that are beautifully balanced for cooler months. This is a mneu you can just keep reading again and again! The menu is also very reasonably priced with 2 courses for £19.95, and 3 courses for just £24.95.
It took me a while to decide, but our host Emma recommended Grilled Spatchcock Quail, which turned out to be a fantastic recommendation.
GRILLED SPATCHCOCK QUAIL
Coriander, preserved lemon, pomegranate salsa & chermoula dip
Quail is one of the smallest breeds of speciality poultry available, traditionally served with chips and redcurrant jelly. My plate did not look anything like traditionally served quail. The dish was prepared with a modern, Middle Eastern twist and served with coriander pomegranate salsa & absolutely delicious chermoula dip.
Roasted Crown Prince beets, pearl barley, balsamic and horseradish crème fraîche
SCOTCH EGG OF VENISON & RAMSEY’S BL ACK PUDDING
Autumn rémoulade and homemade apple purée
PAN ROASTED SEA SCALLOPS
Jerusalem artichoke purée, Paris brown mushrooms & toasted chestnut crumb
For my main course, I chose Slow Roasted Highland Venison Steak with pan-fried maple glazed bacon, pickled baby beets and pomme mousseline. For me, venison is a perfect dish for cold autumn months.
SLOW ROASTHIGHLAND VENISON STEAK
Pan-fried maple glazed bacon, pickled baby beets, pomme mousseline
Andy decided to go for Roast North Atlantic Cod with Celeriac Purée, Winter Girolles, Leeks & Truffle Oil.
ROAST NORTH ATLANTIC COD
Celeriac purée, winter girolles, leeks & truffle oil
Our host Emma went for Lobster Risotto, with Carnaroli Rice, Lobster Meat & Bisque finished with Mascarpone.
Carnaroli rice, lobster meat & bisque finished with mascarpone
To finish off with I opted for the Vanilla panna cotta with Poached winter fruits & toasted almonds and Andy decided to go for Poached Williams pear and blackberry with a crispy crumb topping, cinnamon ice cream
POACHED PEAR CRUMBLE
Poached Williams p ear and blackberry with a crispy crumb topping, cinnamon ice cream
To be honest, I was a little bit jealous when I saw Andy’s dessert, but when I tried my panna cotta, all that was forgotten.
VANILLA PANNA COTTA
Poached winter fruits & toasted almonds
The silky, custard-like dessert, paired well with poached winter fruits & toasted almonds was absolutely divine. Sometimes panna cotta can be very rich, but this one was just perfectly set.
AUTUMN ETON MESS
Poached fig, plum and autumn berries, zesty lemon curd, meringue and toasted gingerbread
BLACKBERRY & PISTACHIOTRIFLE
Our journey of autumn colours and flavours was over and we were all sitting around round table drinking red wine and chatting about future events at Malmaison.
We’ve had a very enjoyable evening. My taste buds were shaken with a cascade of colours and flavours. Certainly, new Autumn offering from Malmaison is perfectly tailored to cooler, wetter months and for the reasonable price ( 2 courses for £19.95 and 3 courses for just £24.95) it’s a winner.
I would like to thank Malmaison Edinburgh for hosting a fantastic evening . No doubt we will be back soon.
